The Mundanity of Life

Image
Words fail me, My pen refuses to write About the mundanity of life - The octopus that has me in its clutches. Come, O traveller, and clear the path Through the snow-covered landscape of my heart, Release me of this bondage To mundanity, Let the water beneath the snow flow In an endless stream And in my pen, a seed sow, The fruit of which remains unwithered forever. - N.A.

The Sorrow of Existence

Image
Gham-e hasti ka Asad kis se ho juz marg ilaaj sham'a har rang me~ jalti he sahar hone tak Except death, O Asad, what healeth the sorrow of existence, The candle, in all shades burn, till the dawn breaks -           ( Translation by NA )

Whosoever He Wills...

The heart burns with desire, Perfection, it seeks, Dreams, it wishes to fulfill… It dreams of treading the path, Walked by the people of Noor . Light they are, Noorun ‘ala noor, Light upon light, they become. The heart that dreams, The heart that wishes, Is hitherto unaware, Of the reality of the path; The silence, The solitude, The pain, The breaking of the idol called ‘desire’, All come before the fire of Love Makes one a majnun , And takes away the burden of consciousness. When the lover annihilates, And only the Beloved remains, Only then it is, Light upon light. Whosoever He wills, He guides. - Bint Akram

Corrigendum: 'musaafir shab se uThte he~ jo jaana duur hota he' by Agha Hashar

A blogger shared the Ghazal which gives the correct version of the verse entitling the previous post. I am extremely thankful. The poet is AGHA HASHAR.

The Onset

The Onset By N.A. The silence approaches As time stealthily moves And fades into the darkness Of a cool autumn night - That time of the year When sorrows flit across the landscape of heart Before settling into it like dead autumn leaves. In Poets' Corner image source

"غنچہ پھر لگا کھلنے"

My younger brother recently returned from his hostel to spend his Eid holidays with us. He got me a book, Ghuncha phir khilne laga, by the famous mazaahiya  (I do not consider the word 'comic' to be very appropriate for some unknown reason)   Urdu poet, Anwar Masood . Following is the couplet with which the book opens and which is also a part of one of the mazaahiya  Ghazals in the book. This couplet is resonating in my mind so loudly since yesterday that I am tempted to share it here on my blog: بڑے نمناک سے ہوتے ہیں تیرے قہقہے انور کوئی دیوار گریہ ہے تیرے اشعار کے پیچھے (baRe namnaak se hote he~ tere qehqahe anwar koi diivaar-e girya he tere asha'ar ke piichhe)

My Narrative is Naught but a Search for the Bygones

Yet another independence day, but this time it is not free of the gloom and despair that seems to be rising with every passing day in our country. How it relates to poetry, you might wonder. Let me ask, how does it not? Everything that goes around a genuine poet bears its marks on his soul. If a poet is not sensitive to his surroundings then he must review and think deeply about his art. He must think if his art blinds him to what goes on around him or does it provide him with insights that others probably lack. If a poet is able to absorb the sorrows of the present in his self, wisdom will follow. Only then he would be able to successfully look back into the past and come up with a vision for the future. This of course reminds us of none other than Iqbal, who once said about his art: “Mein, keh meri ghazal mein hai aatish-e rafta ka suraagh Meri tamam sarguzasht kho’ay hu’on ki justuju” Think about it! -N.A. Hamdardi ba-binavayaan - Do we really feel for them?

The current situation of the displaced people of Swat reminded me of the following poem by Shaykh Sa'adi rahimahullah , which was there in our Persian syllabus. Although the poem is about the famine that struck Damascus - as a result of which massive devastation of life occurred -, I am able to relate it to the situation of those who have become 'displaced' within their own homeland: Chunaan qehet-saali shud ander damishq Keh yaaraan faramoosh kardand ishq (When famine struck Damascus, lovers forgot their love) Chunaan aasmaan bar-zameen shud bakheel Keh lub tar na kardand zar'ae wa nakheel (When heavens became stringent with waters, the lips of the seed and date trees remained parched) Bay-khuusheed sar chashma-hayi qadeem Namaanad aab, juz aab-e ashk-e yateem (Ancient rivers dried up; no water but that of the orphan's tears was left) Nabuudi bay-juz aah bayweh zani Agar bar shudi duudi az ruuzani (No voice except for that of the widow's rose from casements lik...

I have always highly admired Amjad Islam Amjad's exceptional talent for composing nazm . The following is, however, what he has titled as a Na'atiya Nazm in his collection, Baarish ki Aawaaz . It is beautiful, indeed. Poets are poets because they externalise our internal feelings and thoughts by transforming them into words. And words undoubtedly are too valuable at times... Na'atiya Nazm Amjad Islam Amjad Yeh jo bay-rung si bay-aab si aati hai nazar Issi miTTi pe paRa karte thay vo noor qadam Jin ki aahaT ka tasalsul hai yeh saara aalam Jin ki khushboo mein haray rehte hain dil ke mausam Jis ki hairat se bharay rehtay hain khwabon ke nagar Vo jo ik tang sa rasta hai Hira ki jaanib! Uss ke phailaao mein konayn simaT jaatay hain Aankh mein chaaron taraf rung se lehraatay hain Paa'on khud jis ki taraf khinchte chalay jatay hain Yehi jaada hai jo jaata hai Khuda ki jaanib Kitni sadiyon se mussallat tha koi shak mujh per Apnay hone ki gav...

"Majzoob-e Firangi" - Nietzsche

Only Iqbal could have made a claim like that and quite rightly so... :) This is what he had to say to Nietzsche who he considered as hakeem! Hareef-e nukta-e Tawheed ho saka na Hakeem Nigaah chahiye israar-e laa ilaaha ke liye **** Agar hota vo majzoob-e firangi iss zamaane mein Iqbal uss ko samjhata muqaam-e Kibriya kya hai despite feeling the need for translating these verses, I do not feel like translating them, lest the essence gets lost!
